Obituary for Deacon Isaiah Herman Goodson, Sr.

Weighing only three pounds, Deacon Isaiah Herman Goodson, Sr., was the fourth child born May 1, 1927 to the late Rev. Joseph Ivan Goodson and Ophelia Magnolia Hall Goodson. Isaiah was educated in Wake and Johnston County schools and proudly received his GED from Needham Broughton High School.

As a youth, he was responsible for assisting with the family farm. At his father’s request, in lieu of going into the military, he remained at the farm to support the family.

Isaiah gave his life to Christ and joined church at a very early age, where he continued his work until his declining health. In his early years, he served as church custodian. Isaiah was also a faithful servant as a Sunday School Teacher, a Trustee, Superintendent of Sunday School, member of the Male Chorus, member of the Mass Choir, Deacon and Deacon Board Chairman, where he has served as a long-time member of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

Isaiah was joined in matrimony to the late Ulean Bertha Williams. To this union was born Debra, Isaiah Jr., Gracie, Randolph (deceased), Stanley, Terrence and Tiffany.

At the age of 17, he and his brother Augustus, built their first two story tobacco barn for their father. This learning experience laid the ground work for him to become a brick mason and a carpenter prior to becoming a long distance truck driver for Dillon Supply Company where he worked until his retirement. He was a firm believer that you should
