Obituary for Bennie R. Brown

Devoted son, brother, father, uncle, cousin, nephew, brother-in-law, god-father and best friend. Mr. Bennie Ray Brown was the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Mary Katherine Brown, Jr. Bennie was known to his family as “Bennie Ray”, “B.B.”, and “Bennie”. His smile alone was warm and genuine. Bennie was kind-hearted, never met a stranger, humble, generous, loyal, and had a great sense of humor.

Bennie Ray had 4 best friends when most people only have 1 or 2. One of his best friend’s happened to be his 1st cousin, Demetrius “Meatball” Johns, Michael Fairley whom Bennie was also the God-Father to his daughter Chanity “Peaches” Fairley, Raymond “Slick” Cooley and Leroy Harris. These guys were like the “Jackson 5”, they were truly brothers. You never saw one without the other. They were all over Raleigh, North Carolina like “WASPS”!!! They were so close that one of his best friends, Michael Fairley, asked Bennie Ray to move to Atlanta, Georgia and he moved to Atlanta without a 2nd thought.

Bennie Ray was educated at Carnage Junior High and Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He later became a self-taught Sous Chef and professional Ice Sculptor. In 1995, Bennie catered his sister’s Kay and brother-in-law George’s wedding whereby he
did a beautiful ice sculpture of two kissing doves with a heart as a gift to the newly, wed couple. Also, it just happened that the food prep for the wedding was done at Demetries “Meatball” Johns home where he hung out often. Bennie often referred his sister Kay as the “President” or “First Lady” simply because she was the baby girl and what she wanted she got from Bennie; not because she was spoiled but because she was well loved. One summer at the farm house of the late, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene and Landis Johns Sr., B.B. showed out for the family gathering by catering from Atlanta and brought 2 cars and 1 SUV full of food!! Bennie often said, “his family came before anything!!!” and “family first!!!”.

Bennie’s career started at Ballentine’s Cafeteria as a Sous Chef for 2 years, K & W Cafeteria in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, North Carolina as a Sous Chef for 15 years, Angus Barn, an upscale steakhouse and lavish wine cellar, as a Sous Chef for 8 years and while living in Atlanta, Georgia he worked at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast “Castle on the Hill” Peachtree Corners, Georgia as a Sous Chef for 20 years.

In 2008, Bennie returned back home to help care for his ailing dad and his sister Dorothy “Doris” M. Brown Hannah of Marion, SC.

Within the past 4 years of Bennie Ray’s health declining, his sister Kay and brother Earl did not leave the side of their beloved, brother Bennie. Their relentless love and support for B.B. never altered or wavered. They did exactly what their parents taught them to do. LOVE AND TAKE CARE OF YOUR FAMILY! Both Kay and Earl were there for Bennie during the happy and sad days during his illness. Often times, making sure that Bennie was taken care of even before they took care of themselves. Bennie communicated with Earl “Easy” Brown with a thumbs up letting him know that, “I am Ok, brother”. During the passing of their father in 2010, Bennie requested to be cremated to his mother, sisters and brother and family on numerous occasions. Bennie never caused conflict or complained just like the song said, “I Won’t Complain” that was sung so eloquently by the late, Mr. Leroy Farrar.

Bennie proceeded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Mary Katherine Brown, Jr., sister Dorothy “Doris” M. Brown Hannah and niece Kimberly N. Hannah.

Bennie leaves to cherish his memory a faithful and caring brother and sister, Earl Brown of Raleigh, NC and Kay Farrar (George) of Cary, NC, one son; Semetrius “Nuke” Gattis of Durham, NC, two nephews; Frederick Hannah (Jossett) of New Orleans, LA and Warren Hannah (Penny) of Conway, SC, one niece; DeAngela Farrar Perry (Jerone) of Raleigh, NC, two aunts; Roberta Johns of Raleigh, NC and Emma H. Johns of Norcross, GA, three uncles; Alfred Johns and Carl Johns of Raleigh, NC and Joseph Brown (Doris) of Garner, NC, one god-daughter; Chanity “Peaches” Fairley of Raleigh, NC, one special daughter; Allisa “Lisa Pooh” Gattis of Chapel Hill, NC and a host of cousins and friends.
