Obituary for Joseph Stewart
Joseph Stewart was born on September 28, 1923 to Jazy Bell Odam and Coshmore Stewart in Sanford, Florida
He attended public schools where he excelled but would often be reprimanded for letting his imagination lead him to drawing instead of focusing on his academics. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Lake Wells, Florida.
He was reared by his Grandmother, Ms. Emma Thomas, whom he remained devoted to for her entire life. Ms. Thomas also reared his first cousin, Lawrence Epps (better known as John). Joe and John formed a brotherly relationship and through out their lives considered themselves as brothers.
After school, Joseph was drafted into the Army during World War II (Feb7,1943 to Feb 5, 1946) and served in the Asian region. He enjoyed pointing out all the countries on a map where he was stationed.
After his Army service, Joseph attended Florida A&M where he took art classes. Joseph entered one of his paintings in an Atlanta art Competition and won an honorable mention. That piece among many others is featured prominently in his home.
He relocated to New York City and worked at CBS studios for several years. He later moved on to work for the New York City Transit Authority until his retirement.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Mary Stewart; Aunt, Jewel Woods; Nephews, Lawrence Epps Jr. and Andrew (Randy) Edwards; Sisters-In-Law Ineta Brown, Patty Brown and Audrey Edwards; Nieces Patricia (Marion) McLeod, Linda (Ken) Wilson, Doris Campbell, Beverly Smith, and Renee Edwards.
He also leaves a host of other family members and friends to grieve the loss of a dedicated family member and friend.
