Obituary for Nemeta B. Smith

Mrs. Nemeta Ballentine Hicks Smith, the daughter of James and Virginia Belle Barbee Ballentine, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, on July 22, 1917. She peacefully entered eternal rest on Sunday, June 9, 2019.

Nemeta attended Wake County Public Schools and graduated from Berry O’Kelly High School in 1937. After high school, Nemeta moved to New York City where she lived for several years. Upon returning to Raleigh, she was employed by St. Agnes Hospital, Durham Life Insurance Company, and the United States Postal Service.

In 1945, Nemeta married Vann Hicks. To this union, a daughter, Beverly LaVerne, was born on October 30, 1946. After the death of her husband Vann in 1965 and her daughter Beverly in 1969, Nemeta married Willie L. Smith in 1972. In this marriage, Nemeta gained two stepsons, Wilton and Ronald Smith.

Nemeta professed Christ at an early age and was joined by baptism to the fellowship of Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina. She remained an active and involved member until her health declined. During her active years at Watts Chapel, Nemeta served as church secretary, a longstanding member of the missionary ministry, the culinary arts ministry, the ushers’ ministry, and the seniors’ ministry. She loved sharing stories about her favorite times preparing meals for church functions and serving as chief for the children ushers. Nemeta was also a faithful Sunday School member and Bible Study attendee. On the community level, Nemeta was a member of the Wake County YWCA and a lifetime member of the NAACP.

Nemeta Smith was a charming, lovely, delightful, vivacious, gregarious, and generous person who dearly loved and was loved by all her nieces and nephews as well as other family and friends. She spent her life loving and caring for several generations of relatives and adopted relatives. She loved all children—relatives, neighbors, friends, and acquaintances. Nemeta admonished, advised, corrected, babysat, comforted, shopped for, cooked for, and gave tirelessly of herself to all of her loved ones. At some point in their lives, each one was convinced that he or she was her favorite, but she loved them equally and unconditionally. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and forever friend.
In addition to caring for family and friends, Nemeta loved cooking, entertaining family and friends, and working in her yard tending her plants. She was an excellent cook, and everyone loved her homemade rolls, cakes, and ice cream. At age 95, she was in her yard trimming the shrubbery and sweeping the curb. Aunt Nemeta also enjoyed telling a good story. She often shared fond memories of growing up with eleven sisters and brothers. She talked about being as tough and daring as her brothers and of never turning down the opportunity to physically challenge any one of them. Aunt Nemeta, “You were the best aunt any child could have ever hoped for. We will forever remember you.”

Mrs. Nemeta Ballentine Smith was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her daughter, two husbands, and a stepson.

Nemeta leaves to cherish her precious memories her stepson, Ronald Smith; sisters-in-law, Willie Taylor Hicks and Elizabeth and Dean Ballentine; nieces, Theresa Hales (Leroy), Annie B. Jones, Mary Ballentine Thomas, Josephine Glenn Noble (Walter), Djuana, Stephanie, and Lisa Ballentine and Felicia Ballentine Lowe; nephews, Nathaniel Jones (Gladys), Eddie and Michael Glenn (Eularia) , Stanley, James, George (Brenda), Mark (Brittany), and Devon Ballentine (Gloria); and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
