Obituary for Nelson H. Avery

Nelson Hugo Avery was born July 4, 1951 in Wake County to Julius and Wilma Avery. He departed this life on May 12, 2020 at Tower Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh, NC.

Nelson attended Garner Consolidated School in Garner, NC and W.E.B. Dubois High School in Wake Forest, NC. He graduated from Bunn High School in Bunn, NC. After graduation, he attended and completed Harris Barber College and thereafter found employment at Fowlers Barber Shop in Raleigh, NC. He later was employed with the State of North Carolina and retired after twenty-nine years of service.

Nelson was baptized at an early age at Wake Baptist Grove Church. He was the President of the Usher Board, and active in the Male Chorus. He served on both ministries until his health declined.

Nelson met the love of his life Frances in 1970. They united in holy matrimony in 1974. To this union they had one son, Marcus.

Nelson loved the NBA Los Angeles Lakers and the NFL Pittsburg Steelers. He enjoyed washing cars, and recording music for his family and friends. Regarding fashion, he had to match from head to toe. Nelson’s specialty was cooking on the grill for family functions. His favorite meat was good ole fried chicken.

Nelson was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Avery; and mother-in-law, Addie Sue Graham.

Nelson leaves to cherish his precious memories his wife of forty-six years, Frances of the home; son, Marcus Lamont Avery (Joy) of Clayton, NC; granddaughter, Avion Cobb of Raleigh, NC; father, Julius Avery (Ailean) of Garner, NC; two brothers, Cecil Avery (Deborah) of Bunn, NC, and Ricky Dunston (Angela) of Durham, NC; two sisters, Vanessa A.
