Obituary for Nadine Stewart

Nadine Lamore (Williams) Stewart was a beloved wife and mother, a dedicated teacher, sports savant, and lover of seafood. She was born on May 29, 1940 in Mt. Holly, NJ to Loice Williams, Sr. and Clarice (Moore) Williams Brown. She passed away peacefully on February 5, 2020.

Nadine truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with friends and family, spending time with her daughter and grandchildren and watching sports. Nadine had an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way.

Gifted with poise and posture, Nadine always knew she’d be a teacher. She was educated in Burlington City Public Schools and graduated from Burlington City High School in 1958. After graduating, she headed to Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN where she was a majorette, voted Miss Charm, and earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1962. A life-long learner, something made plain by the stacks of books and magazines piled high in her Cincinnati home, it made sense to pursue graduate studies. In 1965, she earned a master’s degree in Education from Xavier University. Not long after, she accepted a position as a first grade teacher with Cincinnati’s Public Schools. For forty-three years, she guided the dreams of thousands of wide-eyed students until her retirement in 2002.

On July 26, 1980, she married Leslie Stewart, a tall drink of water with copper skin and an afro that would make any 1970s star envious. From this union came a daughter, Lesley Lynncola (Stewart) West. Together, Nadine and Leslie raised Lynncola in Cincinnati until Leslie’s sudden passing in 1994. Deeply hurt and widowed, Nadine leaned on the unwavering support of her mother, brothers and a host of friends as she raised Lynncola, a talented, straight A student, on her own. Each holiday and summers, she would return to her roots in New Jersey to spend time with her mother, Clarice and other extended family.

Nadine was an always encouraging and supportive mother who poured everything into her child. She was also an avid Young & the Restless fan and Sports savant, keeping up with football, basketball, tennis, and golf. Nadine enjoyed reading, playing the piano and going to the casino in her free time. To the day of her passing, Nadine was a member of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Cincinnati, OH.

Nadine is preceded in death by her father, Loice Williams; brothers, Loice Williams and Rodney Williams; and husband, Leslie Stewart.

Nadine is survived by her mother, Clarice, and stepfather, Larry Brown; daughter, Lesley West (David); three grandchildren, Dasia Lynnae West, David Benjamin West, and Damani Lee West; and a host of family members and friends.
