Obituary for Fidelia Thorpe

Fidelia Thorpe, 88 of Raleigh, NC, departed her life peacefully at 8:03 AM Sunday, June 14, 2020 in her home, surrounded by her loving, devoted children, and grandchildren. She was born August 14, 1931 to the late Hattie and Kelly Terry. Fidelia attended school in Johnston County, North Carolina.

Fidelia was a dedicated and faithful member of Pleasant Hill United Church of Christ for forty years where she loved her pastor, his wife, and church family. At PHUCC she served on the Mother Board and as a missionary, visiting the sick and feeding the hungry. She was a loving mother to all her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was also a mother to her surrounding community and won the Benny Moore Mother of the Year Award in 1998, hosted by St. Augustine’s College.

Fidelia loved cooking a plethora of delicious meals, where everyone was welcomed to eat. Fidelia also enjoyed the company of others (especially her grandchildren), watching her favorite TV shows, playing board games, and making her bead necklaces and bracelets. She had an eye for fashion and took pride in donning a stylish hat. She enjoyed listening to gospel music, particularly the Canton Spirituals Gospel group.

Fidelia will be remembered as a graceful, God fearing, faithful, warm-hearted woman who cherished her family and embraced every moment with them. She always had a smile, even when times were tough. She had a quiet strength and never complained about being ill. She always gave it to Jesus “MY DOCTOR.” She was a caring woman who loved the Lord, her family and friends. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Fidelia is predeceased by her husband, Walter McLeod; daughter, Ellawease John Bapstite; granddaughter, Felicia Thorpe-Denning; sisters, Pauline Alford, Beatrice Sapp, Thelma Sanders, Henrietta Terry, and Mamie Terry; and brothers, Kelly Terry, James Terry, and Randolph Terry.

Fidelia leaves to cherish and celebrate her memories, her sons: Walter McLeod, Jr. (Audrey) and Tyrone McLeod; daughters: Lucy Sanders (Lestea), Gloria Thorpe, Diane Perry, Isabell Ward, Joyce Holley, Margaret McLeod, and Nicole Locklear (Harold); two bonus daughters, Betty Corbett and Joanne Sattlewhite; goddaughter, Daisa Pone; thirty-one grandchildren; forty great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
