Obituary for Emma McKinney

Emma Lee McKinney was born in Holly Springs, North Carolina on November 16, 1950, becoming the youngest out of six children born to the late Reford and Lillie Williams-McKinney. She has one brother, Mr. Reford McKinney, Jr. and a daughter, Laura Christie “Imani” Williams that proceeded her in death. She submitted to God’s will and victoriously died on Friday, November 6, 2020.

Emma was educated in the Wake County Public School System and attended Fuquay-Springs High School. She was always known for her love of reading and hunger for knowledge. After receiving her high school diploma, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and worked several years with Hill Top Home and as an in-home nurse for the Hilker family of Raleigh, NC. She received numerous accolades from the residents’ families for her attentiveness and care. As a demonstration of her determination and drive, she also owned and operated the Building Cleaning Workers Company while working as a CNA.

Emma then pursued her other passion of working with children. She acquired several certifications and credentials as well as an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Wake Technical Community College. With these accomplishments, Emma achieved the educational qualification to be certified by the NC Institute for Child Development Professionals and spent eight years working with special needs children. Her fortitude guided her to craft another self-owned business called “A Place in the Son”. This was not just any daycare; but a haven where she taught conversational etiquette along with the usual preschool curriculum.

Emma has always acknowledged God as her personal Savior, and strived to serve Him. On any given day, you could hear the soft tones of spirituals and religious teachings playing on her radio. It was inevitable that she would attend Justice Fellowship International College and received a Bachelor’s of Theology Degree. As she posed in her cap and gown for her graduation picture, the glow of success radiated through her smile. She was on her way to obtaining a Master’s of Religious Education Degree from Clarksville Theological Seminary prior to her health failure.

Carrying on her legacy in her absence are: her loving children, Johnny (Alyson) McKinney of Holly Springs, NC; Elvis McKinney of Raleigh, NC; and Frederick (Trivia) Williams of Cary, NC; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She’s also survived by four siblings; Robert (Grace) McKinney of Holly Springs NC, Bertha Mae (Bill-deceased) McKinney of Apex, NC, Joyce McKinney (Ben-deceased) of Clayton, NC and Claney McKinney of Raleigh, NC and a host of loving nieces, nephews and other dear relatives.
